Neuropsychological Evaluation
A neuropsychological evaluation is the most comprehensive of testing methods and is important in determining accurate diagnosis/diagnoses. It includes an in-depth assessment of intellectual and academic functioning and integrates examination of the fundamental neurocognitive process including but not limited to attention, memory, executive processes, language abilities, and motor functions that underlie these more general abilities. Additionally, a more thorough evaluation of personality and psychological functioning is often incorporated. The goal of a neuropsychological evaluation is to help clarify an individual’s functional abilities that may help explain why they are having difficulties in certain areas. For example, a student may have academic struggles due to problems with attention, language, and/or a specific learning disability. More importantly, the neuropsychological evaluation is designed to identify an individual’s learning style in addition to their strengths and weaknesses so that proper educational and treatment intervention programs can be designed to help them achieve their potential.
Psychoeducational Evaluation
A psychoeducational evaluation is more limited in scope than the comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation but typically includes intelligence and academic testing in addition to a screening of adaptive functioning. Oftentimes, a diagnosis cannot be reliably provided based on the results of a psychoeducational evaluation alone.
Post-concussion Evaluation
Involves cognitive testing aimed at identifying what accommodations or treatments a concussed student may require to support their functioning in school or home. Oftentimes, if the concussed individual continues to demonstrate symptoms over an extended period of time, a more complete neuropsychological evaluation may be warranted.
Gifted and Talented Evaluation
Primarily sought to help identify whether a student displays an exceptional aptitude in learning and reasoning and typically includes intelligence testing. Depending on your school district, measures of academic competence may also be required in order to help determine eligibility for accelerated educational services.
Personality/Psychological Assessment
Often incorporated into the comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation but can be conducted separately. Such testing is done using self-report inventories and projective measures to help provide more detailed information about an individual’s characterological make-up and emotional functioning.
Forensic Neuropsychological/Psychological Evaluation and Expert Witness Testimony
Involves the assessment of an individual in a legal context in order to provide fair, objective, and defensible information to the attorney, court, or judicial system relevant to the case and legal question at hand. The evaluation typically includes a neuropsychological assessment in addition to collateral sources of data such as careful review of records and/or interviews of others and may also require appearance in depositions or court hearings to provide expert testimony.
Additional Services
ConsultationDr. Bilginer’s experience in working with individuals with varying levels of functioning as well as their families, clinicians, and educators has provided her with extensive knowledge about different approaches and resources available to help them make progress in different settings (e.g., home, work, school).
The consultation process begins with your initial inquiry. At the time of the first contact, basic information will be gathered about your circumstances, explanation of the process will be provided, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. There is no charge for this call. If you decide to proceed with the evaluation, an intake appointment will be scheduled. At this time, a detailed history will be taken and your or your child’s current situation will be discussed. Depending on your needs, this appointment should take between 30 to 45 minutes. Copies of relevant records (e.g., school progress reports, prior evaluations) will be requested so that a records analysis may be performed. Testing appointments will then be scheduled. |
